Seeking climate resiliency, Rare Forms helps build houses with straw

EASTHAMPTON — When Easthampton builder Greg Bossie was looking for environmentally friendly ways to insulate the houses he constructs, he harkened back centuries to when people stayed warm by tucking hay into the walls of their homes.

“The way all insulation products work is by trapping pockets of air that slow down the movement of heat energy through a wall, roof or floor. Straw functions the same way. It is trapping lots of little air pockets inside the structure of the wall,” he said.
