The New York Yankees could without their first baseman for the next six weeks.
Anthony Rizzo fractured his arms on Sunday in New York’s 9-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Monday. While the injury won’t require surgery, it could sideline Rizzo for four-to-six weeks.
The injury occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Rizzo collided with relief pitcher Brennan Berardino as he was running down the first base line. Rizzo remained down in visible pain before walking off with a trainer. He didn’t return to the game.

It’s unclear how the Yankees will handle Rizzo’s absence, but Rosenthal suggested third baseman DJ LeMahieu to get a chunk of playing time at first base and have Oswaldo Cabrera play third.
Rizzo was batting .233 with eight home runs, 28 RBI and a .341 slugging percentage in 70 games this season for the first-place Yankees.
After dropping two of three games to the Red Sox at Fenway Park over the weekend, the Yankees now prepare for a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles beginning Tuesday. Baltimore sits just 1.5 games behind New York for first place in the standings.
