It appears Chelsea has found its backup goalkeeper after reaching a transfer agreement with the New England Revolution to send Djordje Petrović to the English club, journalist Fabrizio Romano reported.
The Revs will now be in the market for a goalkeeper not even a year after signing Petrović, who replaced Matt Turner after he left for Arsenal.
According to reports, the transfer fee to New England from the Premier League is worth nearly $20 million — the largest fee to ever be paid for an MLS goalkeeper. The deal is not yet finalized, but Romano reported the contract to be for seven years with an option for 2031. Petrović will undergo a medical this week in London. It was originally supposed to happen Wednesday, but his VISA application has pushed it to either Thursday or Friday.
New England reportedly turned down transfer bids for Petrović from British club Nottingham Forest and French side Nantes earlier this year.
The 23-year-old has made quite the impression on the league since arriving via FK Cukaricki last year as Turner’s replacement, who recently joined Nottingham Forest after a brief stay with Arsenal.
Petrović made 43 starts for the Revolution and was named and 2023 MLS All-Star. He was also voted second in the 2022 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
A report from The Blazing Musket’s Seth Macomber earlier this week revealed the Revs plan to sign Tomáš Vaclík as Petrović’s replacement.
The Revolution return to action on Aug. 26 against Montreal.
