Report recommends changes in the way UMass handles protests

AMHERST — University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes pledged to continue “rebuilding community” in the wake of last spring’s student arrests and a new report that recommends changes in the way the university handles campus unrest.

A study group created by the chancellor presented policies, procedures and guidelines regarding the campus demonstrations last spring that led to the arrest of more than 130 people during pro-Palestinian protests. Reyes made the decision to call in police from a number of agencies to end an unsanctioned protest over the war in Gaza.
