Report: Ex-Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo expected to report to training camp after passing physical

Jimmy Garoppolo took an important step in his recovery from foot surgery when he passed his physical on Sunday, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Raiders QB suffered a broken foot in Week 13 last season while he was with the 49ers.

When Garoppolo agreed to the three-year deal with Las Vegas, a waiver was added to the deal that acknowledged he wouldn’t pass a physical due to the foot injury. Garoppolo underwent surgery and has yet to participate in the Raiders’ activities.

Coach Josh McDaniels downplayed Garoppolo’s absence during OTAs, saying it would be a “poor decision” to have him on the field and they were being cautious with him.

But the recovery from surgery was successful. The 31-year-old will participate in training camp when it begins next week and Garoppolo will not be placed on the physically unable to perform list, Schefter reported.

The former Patriots quarterback spent the last five seasons in San Francisco. And though he enjoyed success throughout his tenure, he also suffered numerous injuries — including his foot. He put off surgery in hopes of it being able to heal with rest and rehab, but had the surgery after signing with the Raiders in March.

Brian Hoyer, another former Patriots quarterback, was taking first-team reps wit the Raiders this summer in Garoppolo’s absence.

Garoppolo now will look for a fresh start in Vegas under McDaniels as the Raiders look to rebound from a 6-11 2022 season.
