Report: Date set for No. 1 draft pick to make his NBA debut with Spurs against Mavericks

We now know when Victor Wembanyama will make his long-awaited NBA debut.

Substack’s Marc Stein reported Thursday that the San Antonio Spurs will open their season on Oct. 25 against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, will go against a potential MVP candidate in Doncic as the two franchises look to rebound from an ugly 2022-23 season.

Wembanyama had a rough Summer League debut with only nine points, but bounced back in a big way in his second game when he drained 27 points, 12 rebounds and added three blocks for the Spurs. He was shut down after those two games, but because San Antonio wanted to give him time off before going into his rookie season.

The Mavericks have won seven of their last eight games against the Spurs. Their most recent loss came last season when Dallas sat Doncic and Kyrie Irving in hopes to secure a strong draft pick.

The rest of the NBA regular-season schedule, according to Stein, will drop later this week.
