Wilbraham – Beyond Plastics: What the continued production of plastic is costing our planet. With the plastic industry expanding like never before and the crisis of ocean pollution growing, FRONTLINE and NPR investigate the fight over the future of plastics. Decoding the Talmud program
Longmeadow – This winter LYA will offer “Decoding the Talmud,” a new six-session course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI). The course aims to demystify the intricate world of the Talmud, the monumental classic that has shaped Jewish learning for centuries. For a new learner, the Talmud can be intimidating and inaccessible, remaining a closed book for the masses. Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. participants will meet its main characters, explore its dynamic history, and engage in authentic Talmudic study. They will learn the key terms, logical principles, and historical context required to decipher the text of this 1,500-year-old work and discover how it has survived and thrived, continuing to fill Jewish study halls to this day. Polish food sale
Springfield – A Polish food sale (golabki, kapusta, and cabbage, potato & cheese. sweet cheese and blueberry pierogi) will be sold on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church Hall, 25 Parker Street, in the Indian Orchard section. All are welcome to come and purchase.
Celtic service
Longmeadow – St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 335 Longmeadow St., next Celtic service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m. “The Coming of the Light” is the theme of the next Celtic service. The service will incorporate hymns, prayers, candle lights, meditation, periods of silent reflection – and music by Celtic fiddler, Tracy Downs. The Celtic worship services are held the 2nd Saturday of each month, from Oct. through March 2025. They are open to the public with no admission fee.
Longmeadow High School Student-Led Benefit Concert for Jewish Family Service of Western MA
Longmeadow – Student-led groups from the Longmeadow High School Music Department are performing a concert to benefit Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts’ New American Refugee Resettlement Program. The event, conceived by Longmeadow High School student Nick Christoforakis, is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged at the door. All money raised will go towards helping recently resettled refugee families already in Western Mass for whom promised federal funding was recently withheld. “A Little Knight Music” named with the school mascot in mind (“Go Lancers!”) will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at The First Church of Christ, 763 Longmeadow Street.
Annual Souper Socks Saturday
Chicopee – The Holy Mother of the Rosary Church will host its Annual Souper Socks Saturday, Feb. 8 (Snow date: Feb. 15). It will be held in the church hall at 26 Bell Street, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to new socks they will be collecting hats, scarves and gloves and underwear for men women and children. They will be given to organizations in need. Homemade soups and desert will be served to thank the community for their kindness. Springfield – South Congregational Church, an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ in downtown Springfield, invites everyone to its regular worship services, Sundays at 10 a.m. in person at 45 Maple Street in Springfield or on Zoom. The Bible Study group on Zoom will now take place on Mondays at 7 p.m. (use the Zoom worship link) — whether you are new to bible study or have a lifetime of experience, you are welcome. In addition to church services and events, South is particularly engaged in the downtown community, and many public programs are offered in their spaces. Wilbraham – Wilbraham United Church at 500 Main St., welcomes the community to Sunday morning services at 10 a.m. On the first Sunday of every month communion is served with bread and grape juice. Following all Sunday services, there is a Friendship gathering in the Fellowship Hall. Coffee, and other refreshments are served and all are welcomed. Wilbraham United is a merged congregation of the Congregational and Methodist Societies. They celebrate as both a congregation that recognizes the traditions and values of both the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist denominations. Wilbraham United Church is a place where someone from any walk of life can feel comfortable. They are committed to service and sharing their space for the good of the community and to the glory of God. The church is especially welcoming to children, who are gladly received in the worship service. There are church school classes for children who wish to attend for ages 3 through 13 during the worship service time. The church is handicapped accessible with a large parking lot in the rear. Agawam – St. John the Evangelist Church, 833 Main St. will offer weekly adoration ceremonies on Wednesdays between noon and 5:30 p.m. The Holy Mass takes place at 6 p.m. Lawn signs are available for Agawam residents announcing the Year of the Eucharist.
