The Red Sox swung a minor trade with the Tigers in an effort to add some pitching depth Saturday night.
Boston acquired 30-year-old right-hander Trey Wingenter from Detroit in exchange for Single-A righty C.J. Weins, according to a club announcement. According to an industry source, Wingenter had an assignment clause in his minor league deal with Detroit, so the Red Sox acquired him with the intention of adding him to their 40-man roster. A move to that end will almost certainly happen in the coming days, though it doesn’t necessarily mean Wingenter will join the active big league roster. He still has minor league options remaining, meaning he can be sent back and forth between Boston and Triple-A Worcester.
