BOSTON — The Red Sox placed top prospect Marcelo Mayer on the injured list at Double-A Portland on Saturday.

Mayer has left shoulder inflammation, according to a baseball source, and the injury is not considered serious. He was placed on the 7-day IL, retroactive to Aug. 3, so he can return to Portland’s lineup Thursday if healthy.

Mayer, who is ranked the No. 3 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, has not played since Wednesday, when he went 0-for-5 for the Sea Dogs against Bowie. In his last five games (July 27-Aug. 2), the 20-year-old shortstop is 1-for-21 (.048) with 12 strikeouts.

Mayer has struggled offensively since being promoted to Double-A at the end of May. After logging a .290/.366/.524 line with seven homers and an .890 OPS in 35 games at High-A Greenville, he has hit .189 with six homers, 20 RBIs and a .609 OPS at Portland. He has struck out in 49 times while walking on 15 occasions.

Mayer represented the Red Sox at the Futures Game last month in Seattle.
