Red Sox slugger wins AL Player of the Week award after 4 homers in 5-game span

BOSTON — Tyler O’Neill was rewarded for a big week with some hardware.

The Red Sox slugger was named American League Player of the Week for the games spanning July 22-28. In just five games, O’Neill hit .429 (9-for-21) with four homers, eight RBIs, three doubles, a walk, five runs scored, a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .435 on-base percentage. He had two homers in two separate games — Tuesday in Colorado and Saturday against the Yankees in Boston.

O’Neill tied for the major league lead in extra-base hits (7) and led the American League in slugging and total bases (24). He tied for the AL lead in homers and RBIs and ranked third in OPS (1.578). He became the first player in Red Sox history to record three multi-homer games in a span of six or fewer games after also hitting two on July 20 in Los Angeles.

O’Neill was the National League Player of the Week in Sept. 2021 as a member of the Cardinals. He’s the first Red Sox player to win since Rafael Devers did last year on Sept. 18. According to Major League Baseball, Boston’s 144 all-time weekly awards are the most of any club, breaking a tie with the Yankees, who have 143.
