We’ve heard of rain delays. But eclipse delays? That’s a new one.
The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins were initially set to play Monday, April 8 at 2 p.m. EST at Yankee Stadium. That’s right around the time the long-awaited solar eclipse is set to start. While playing a day game that suddenly turns into a night game and back into a day game may seem cool, the Yankees announced that they have decided to push the game back to avoid overlapping with the eclipse.
“After reconsidering the challenges of playing through Monday’s solar eclipse, including potential in-game delays, Major League Baseball and the Yankees have rescheduled the start time of the Yankees-Marlins game on April 8 at Yankee Stadium from 2:05 p.m. to 6:05 p.m.,” the team said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the team confirmed that, despite the change in time, there will be no changes in terms of free stuff for fans. The Yankees said they will still be giving out Yankees Solar Eclipse T-Shirts to the first 15,000 fans at the game.
Gates for Monday’s game are set to open at 3 p.m., shortly before the eclipse is expected to reach its peak at 3:15 p.m., per the New York Post. The eclipse is set to start shortly after 2 p.m. EST in New York City and end at approximately 4:30 p.m.
No other teams are scheduled to play during Monday’s eclipse, with all games starting at 5 p.m. EST or later. It was never a factor for the Boston Red Sox, since they’re off that day.
