Red Sox rain delay: Saturday’s game vs. Orioles won’t start on time

BALTIMORE — The start of Saturday’s Red Sox-Orioles game at Camden Yards will be delayed due to rain — and is now expected to start at 8:20 p.m. ET, according to the home team.

The game was delayed from its original 7:05 p.m. ET start time due to rain. The Orioles announced: “The start of tonight’s game is being delayed by the threat of inclement weather. We are monitoring the National Weather Service reports and will keep you advised of an expected start time as soon as possible.”

The tarp has come off the field. When the game begins, it’ll be righty Brayan Bello (10-5, 4.97 ERA) will start for Boston against the Orioles and rookie lefty Cade Povich (1-5, 6.27 ERA).

The National Weather Service report calls for rain throughout the night in Baltimore: “Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.”

The teams may also face an uphill battle to play Sunday’s series finale, which is set for 1:35 p.m E.T. There’s heavy rainfall expected in the area. The Red Sox will face a tight window to get the game in because they’re flying to Houston on Sunday night ahead of a three-game series against the Astros that starts Monday. The teams have a mutual off day Sept. 5, which is between the final game of a road trip in New York (Mets) and a homestand for the Red Sox.

Here’s Sunday’s forecast: “Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. High near 86. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.”
