Red Sox prospect with ‘uber athleticism’ has .406 OBP, 3 HR, 4 2B in May

Red Sox prospect Miguel Bleis ripped a three-run double in Low-A Salem’s 7-5 loss to Augusta on Saturday.

Bleis went just 13-for-70 (.186 batting average) with six extra-base hits in 18 games during April. But he’s 18-for-56 (.321 batting average) with a .406 on-base percentage, .554 slugging percentage, .960 OPS, three homers, four doubles, six steals, seven RBIs, nine runs, seven walks and 14 strikeouts in 14 games during May.

The 20-year-old center played in only 31 games last year because of a left shoulder subluxation that required surgery. He transformed his body during his rehab. He’s listed at 6-feet, 170 pounds. But Bleis said in March that he’s now approximately 6-foot-2, 203 pounds..

MassLive ranks Bleis No. 4 on its Top 25 Red Sox prospect list behind only Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel.

An MLB scout from another organization told MassLive before spring training: “Injury proneness is a concern; yet very young still with tools across the board to develop a power-speed package with uber athleticism. Overall feel for the game with sound defensive skills and instincts in center field. … Hard contact stands out. Compact stroke with the chance to supply plus contact to project a ceiling of 25-plus homer power in center field or right field; yet he must be patient making up for lost time and developing his strike zone (approach) to upgrade strikeout/walk ratio. Should be on many other team’s radar as a get now with best years in front of them maturing into a solid everyday major league player. … Loves to play.”

PENROD CONTINUES TO DOMINATE

Zach Penrod dominated again Saturday for Double-A Portland. The 26-year-old lefty allowed just one run, one hit and three walks while striking out 10 in a 2-1 win over Somerset on Saturday.

He has a 2.10 ERA (30 innings, seven earned runs), 1.00 WHIP and .173 batting average against in six starts for the Sea Dogs.

Boston signed him last Aug. 16 out of the independent Pioneer League, then assigned him to High-A Greenville where he had a 2.18 ERA (20 ⅔ innings, five earned runs) in four regular starts. He then impressed in the Arizona Fall League. He made four starts for Glendale and led all AFL starters in ERA (1.29).

He throws a 94-97 mph fastball, 85-89 mph power slider and changeup.

CAMPBELL’S OBP UP TO .405

Kristian Campbell went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a 6-3 loss to Winston-Salem on Sunday. He’s batting .294 with a .405 on-base percentage, .559 slugging percentage, .964 OPS, six homers, nine doubles, 20 RBIs, 18 runs, 17 walks and 34 strikeouts in 28 games.

MassLive ranks him No. 25 on its Top 25 list.

The Red Sox drafted Campbell in the fourth round (132nd overall) in July out of Georgia Tech with the compensation pick they received when Xander Bogaerts left in free agency last offseason to sign with the Padres.

He has started 13 games at second base and eight games in center field this year.
