NEW YORK — The Royals’ losing streak extended to seven games Tuesday. But the Red Sox again failed to pick up any ground in the Wild Card standings because they lost, too.
Boston fell 7-2 to the Mets here at Citi Field to remain 4 ½ games behind Kansas City, which controls the third and final AL Wild Card spot.
“I know what the other teams are doing. They’re not playing well either. But the days that we don’t take advantage of it is a wasted day,” manager Alex Cora said earlier this week.
The Twins, which control the second AL Wild Card, also lost. The Red Sox remain 5 ½ games behind them.
Boston also now is tied for fourth with the Tigers. They share the same record (70-69). Detroit took two of three games against the Red Sox at Comerica Park this past weekend.
The Red Sox have just dropped four straight games and have lost 10 of their past 13 games. They have scored five runs in their past 36 innings.
