BOSTON — By thumping the Phillies thanks to an offensive outburst against Aaron Nola on Wednesday night, the Red Sox did something they had failed to do all season: win a series against a team with a winning record.
After being dominated by ace Zack Wheeler in Tuesday’s series opener and falling in an early 4-0 hole Wednesday night, the Red Sox completely flipped the three-game series on the backs of their offense. They scored eight unanswered runs en route to an 8-6 win Thursday then got out to a big lead early in the rubber match before closing out a 9-3 win. In the last 15 innings of the series, the Red Sox outscored the Phillies, 17-5. That’s impressive against any team but particularly notable against one that came to Fenway with the best record in baseball at 46-20.
