Red Sox make 9 roster moves, including promoting two rookies for first time

BOSTON — With their pitching staff on fumes following two bullpen-heavy games against the Astros and their position player mix needing reinforcements with Jarren Duran suspended for two games, the Red Sox made a flurry of roster moves before Monday’s series opener against the Rangers.

Boston activated righty Brayan Bello (who will start Monday) from the paternity list, recalled lefty reliever Bailey Horn and called up two rookies — righty pitcher Chase Shugart and catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper — from Triple-A roster. Duran’s suspension cleared one roster spot. To clear the others, the Sox optioned relievers Brennan Bernardino and Brad Keller to the WooSox and placed James Paxton, as expected, on the injured list with a right calf strain.
