NEW YORK — The Red Sox pitching staff held up its end of the bargain Thursday in the Bronx, limiting the Yankees to just a single run through eight innings while stranding nine on base. But on a night when Boston’s offensive struggles continued, it wasn’t enough.
Juan Soto walked off the Red Sox the bottom of the 10th with an RBI single that plated automatic runner Gleyber Torres and gave New York a 2-1 extra-innings win in the opener of a four-game set. With the loss, the Red Sox fell to 74-73 — and 5-5 against the Yankees so far this season. The ending spoiled a strong night from Cooper Criswell, who went 5 ⅓ innings, and put a bow on a poor offensive showing from both teams, who combined to go 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position before Soto’s at-bat.
