BOSTON — Torrential rain, which began in the top of the second inning at Fenway Park, forced the suspension of the game between the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday night. Heavy rain began shortly after 7:25 p.m. and play was halted minutes later. The team announced the game would be suspended shortly after 9 p.m. after a delay of one hour and 48 minutes.
The game, which was scoreless, will be made up on Monday Aug. 26 at 2:05 p.m. as part of a day-night doubleheader when the Blue Jays return to Boston for a four-game series in the final week of August.
The teams were scoreless in the top of the second when the game was halted, with neither team collecting a hit. The Blue Jays had two baserunners (both the result of walks), while the Red Sox had one (also via a walk).
The warning track surrounding the field began to flood, and as 9 p.m. approached, thunder and lightning surrounded the ballpark.
