‘Raise a glass’: Turtle Swamp Brewing in Jamaica Plain closing its taproom, brewery

After six years of serving patrons in Jamaica Plain, Turtle Swamp Brewing announced on its website that it will close its taproom and brewery next month.

“The last day to visit the brewery to enjoy a pint on the patio will be Saturday, Aug. 19,” brewery co-founders John Lincecum and Nik Walther said in a statement on their website.

The brewery opened in May 2017, not far from where Lincecum and Walther lived at the time, the statement said.

“Through the good times and the rough times, we had the pleasure of welcoming hundreds of thousands of our friends, neighbors, and visitors from around the country to our taproom to share a freshly brewed Orange Line IPA and a simple good time,” the statement read.

Years later, they were planning to open a location in Roslindale until COVID-19 hit, resulting in the need to shut it down, according to an Instagram post from Aug. 11, 2021.

“No one ever went inside,” Walther told Boston.com at the time. “We even got some outdoor seating, but you don’t go to the Roslindale Substation — that beautiful, big building — to sit outside.”

A month later, protests ignited outside the brewery when it joined the owner of its building, Monty Gold, in suing to prevent the construction of an affordable housing apartment complex next door, the Boston Globe reported. All parties reached an agreement resulting in moving the complex 5 feet away from the brewery’s property line, according to Universal Hub.

Walther and Lincecum did not specify what led to the current closure, but they said it was an “unforgettable journey for us, our families, and the dozens of kind folks who joined our staff through the years… Thank you to all who believed in us.”

“Over the next month, we encourage everyone to visit one last time to share their memories of Turtle Swamp and raise a glass in celebration of life and change,” the statement concluded.
