New Year’s Eve partygoers across Massachusetts should plan to pack their umbrellas as they head out to ring in 2025.
National Weather Service forecasters say heavy rain and a few embedded thunderstorms are possible in the Bay State between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday, just in time for the new year.
The precipitation is set to hit the western part of the state first, beginning in the evening in Springfield, then about 10 p.m. in Worcester and hitting Boston by around 11 p.m. In all, up to an inch of rain could fall in the Bay State as 2024 turns into 2025.
But before the rain, forecasters say dry conditions and above-normal temperatures will mark a relatively quiet New Year’s Eve. High temperatures should be in the upper 40s or even low 50s. Temperatures will eventually drop into the 30s.
Showers will linger Wednesday as temperatures remain in the mid-40s to low 50s, though it won’t be a washout. A trend toward colder weather will come Thursday, and temperatures are expected to fall to the teens by Sunday.
