PWHL Boston forward’s ‘hot stick’ led to 2 quick goals in Game 1 win

LOWELL — PWHL Boston took a 1-0 series lead in the Walter Cup Finals with a Game 1 win over PWHL Minnesota on Sunday night at Tsongas Center. A lot of things went right for Boston in the 4-3 win, but one particular hockey stick is getting some credit from the players.

Taylor Wenczkowski scored in the second period to make it 2-2. Not even three minutes later, Hannah Brandt gave Boston a 3-2 lead.

It turns out, they scored using the same stick. Wenczkowski lost hers while she was on the ice. So Brandt, knowing her teammate was a righty, offered hers up just before the goal.

“I was like ‘this is going to be hilarious if she scores with this’ and she did,” Brandt said after the game. “And then the next shift I think is when I scored with it, so that’s a hot stick.”

The second period featured five goals, with Jess Healey scoring Boston’s game-winner 15 seconds after Taylor Heise tied things up for Minnesota. Despite a push from Minnesota at the end of the period and pulling their goalie, Boston hung on for the 4-3 win to take a 1-0 series lead.

Game 2 between Boston and Minnesota is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. EST at Tsongas Center.
