Public virtual hearing set for discussion on new Springfield courthouse

SPRINGFIELD — A virtual public hearing on the siting of a new Hampden County courthouse complex is scheduled just after the city rings in the New Year.

Mayor Domenic Sarno’s office released a public statement flagging the Zoom meeting set for Jan. 2, 2025, at 3 p.m. The long-awaited project has moved at a snail’s pace since advocates for the Roderick Ireland Courthouse on State Street renewed an intense lobbying effort with accusations that environmental conditions at the building were making people ill — including with fatal diseases.

State officials have never conceded that point but Gov. Maura Healey in 2023 pledged $106 million in start-up funding for new construction. The endeavor has lately called the the Springfield Regional Justice Center Project.
