A handful of New England towns and cities are among Massachusetts-based Tripadvisor’s top picks in the first of its annual “Travelers Choice Awards” for 2024, recognizing the “Best of the Best Destinations” sought after by the platform’s reviewers.
In a news release Tuesday, Tripadvisor said its rankings differ from other “best places to travel in 2024″ lists by highlighting the “most loved destinations from 2023,” the “trending hotspots for 2024,” and “travelers’ top-rated spots for every type of trip” — based on the reviews and ratings from actual travelers who have visited these places in the past year.
Tripadvisor found Boston to be the 17th top destination to visit in the U.S. this year, and placed 8th in the U.S. as a food destination.
Boston’s position rose from 22nd to 17th for top U.S. destination to visit for this year over last, Tripadvisor noted, but remained in the same position as last year in its ranking as a food destination.
Among the top “trending destinations” in the U.S. for 2024, Provincetown — on the tip of Cape Cod and known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community and summertime celebrations — came in 5th place overall, Tripadvisor said.
Additionally, the New England destinations of Newport, Rhode Island — with its famously extravagant mansions and picturesque scenery — came in 13th and Portland, Maine came in just behind in 14th, according to Tripadvisor.
The Needham-based travel company — the world’s largest travel guidance platform — said travel saw a “resurgence” in 2023, and that 2024 is “set to see sustained momentum” with 93% of Americans planning to spend the same, if not more, time traveling this year.
In an explanation of its methodology, Tripadvisor said its “2024 Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best Destinations” are calculated based on the quality and quantity of reviews, specific to each award subcategory for accommodations, restaurants, and things to do in destinations listed on its site from Oct. 1, 2022 through Sept. 30, 2023.
