Candy apples are the food representation of a fall fair. But eating them right off the stick is difficult and messy.
With thousands of other foods to eat, I often skip these apples for something easier — and less dangerous for my teeth.
However, I love caramel apples. And this year, it was combined with my other favorite — a Samoas cookie, the ones the Girl Scouts sell featuring caramel, chocolate and coconut.
I was determined to try it. And I discovered there’s a much easier way to order the classic food.
Sliced apples
Red’s Red Apples at The Big E offers the traditional candy apple but it also offers sliced caramel apples at its multiple locations.
Then you can add your toppings to get any caramel apple you want. I asked for them to recreate the samoa apple option in sliced form.
They start by ringing you up for the caramel apple slices, which is $8 and then add $1 for every topping.
The total came out to $10 — a dollar less than the samoa apple on a stick.
It doesn’t look as pretty as a candy or caramel apple on a stick. But this was much easier to eat and share.
You just have to eat it quickly or the caramel begins to harden.
Samoa apples
I grew up calling the Samoas Girl Scout cookies Caramel Delites, and that’s exactly what this is — a caramel delight.
The chocolate, caramel and coconut are the perfect combination on top of the sweet apples.
The toppings are distributed in a way that it’s easy to get each of the toppings in every bite. Occasionally, as the caramel hardens, it does begin to slip off of the apple. But that’s easily fixable.
Overall, I rated this food an 8.5 out of 10.
