Pride, worry collide in Needham as hometown-hero astronaut stuck in space

Astronaut Sunita Williams has been telling her friends from Needham she’s doing just fine while stuck on the international space station — but that hasn’t stopped some residents from worrying about their hometown hero.

Williams, who hails from Needham — where an elementary school is named after her — has been stranded aboard the International Space Station for months, awaiting a spaceship to bring her and her colleague, Barry “Butch” Willmore, back to Earth. While aboard the ISS, some of Williams’s friends told MassLive she regularly contacts them via email, telling them she is doing fine while in space.
