Police looking for driver who hit Massachusetts K9, causing serious injuries

The Groton Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a driver who hit a one of the departments K9s Wednesday, causing him to sustain serious injuries.

K9 Bane was hit by a car on Pleasant Street near the police station at around 4:50 p.m. on Dec. 20, Groton police said on Facebook.

A person who witnessed the crash and two other vehicles stopped and helped the black lab. The person who hit Bane kept driving towards Ayer, police said.

Bane was rushed to Tufts Animal Hospital in serious, but stable condition. His injuries included a broken femur, dislocated hip, broken rips and punctured lungs, according to police.

In an update from his handler, police said Bane was doing well and that the doctors at Tufts were giving him a few days to recover. His next hurdle is surgery on his hip, which they think will be done next week.

As Bane heals, Groton police are asking anyone with cameras, or was in the area when the crash occurred, to contact Detective Andrew Davis with information. Davis can be reached at 978-448-5555 or at adavis@grotonma.gov.
