Police investigating hate crime in Mass. community

Dozens of posters bearing the names and faces of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas were vandalized in Newton on Sunday, an incident police are investigating as a hate crime.

The posters were on a fence outside a home on Homer Street and had been hung there since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, Sgt. Hagai Brandon told MassLive on Monday morning. Overnight Sunday, the signs were covered in black spray paint, others were torn down, and someone wrote “free Gaza” on the fence, police said.

Newton Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime as a result of “the underlying crimes specifically targeting the victims of a protected class,” the department said in a statement posted to Facebook.
