Patriots to work out quarterback prospect (report)

It never hurts to have added competition at the quarterback position.

With veterans reporting to Gillette Stadium on Tuesday and training camp set to start on Wednesday, the Patriots are reportedly working out another quarterback.

According to MLFootball, undrafted free agent Matthew McKay is scheduled to work out for the Patriots on Monday. The 6-foot-4 quarterback just finished up his collegiate career at Elon where he threw for 2,690 yards to go with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. McKay also ran for 458 yards to go with three touchdowns.

After going undrafted in April, McKay was invited to Dallas for the Cowboys rookie minicamp. Meanwhile, the Patriots have three ‘true’ quarterbacks on their roster with Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe and Trace McSorley. The team also has undrafted free agent quarterback Malik Cunningham, who is transitioning to the receiver position.

McKay is well traveled. He started his collegiate career at North Carolina State. After redshirting in 2017, he was a backup quarterback in 2018 and 2019, where he threw for 910 yards with three touchdowns. In 2020, McKay transferred to Montana State. That season, he passed for 2,037 yards to go with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Patriots routinely work out players at all positions. Although it would be a surprise to see them add another quarterback, it’s always worthwhile to work out a young developmental prospect.

Training camp is set to start on Wednesday. The Patriots will hold four practices this week, which are free and open to the public. The team will also practice on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
