Patriots starting QB finally revealed (report)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Apparently Bailey Zappe couldn’t dethrone Mac Jones on the practice field this week.

After splitting first-team reps ahead of Sunday’s game in the Meadowlands, the Patriots still plan to start Jones at quarterback against the Giants, according to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan. Jones was pulled from New England’s most recent loss in Germany, and all week Bill Belichick elected not to reveal his starting quarterback.

“I’ve told everybody to be ready to go,” Belichick said. “Hopefully that’s what they’re all doing. I’m not going to announce starters at every position or whatever. Everybody will be ready to go.”

The Patriots cut third-stringer Will Grier on Saturday morning, so he’d been removed from the equation, and the team opted not to elevate Malik Cunningham from the practice squad either, though the rookie reportedly hasn’t practiced at quarterback in weeks. That means Jones and Zappe will be the only two signal callers available against the Giants.

Though Jones has regressed mightily, Zappe has arguably been even worse in three relief appearances, completing just 10 of 25 passes (40%) and throwing a pick into triple coverage against the Colts.
