Christian Barmore is dealing with a scary health situation that will keep him sidelined for an indefinite amount of time.
The New England Patriots revealed on Sunday that the standout defensive tackle — who was absent from the last two days of training camp — was diagnosed with blood clots. Here is their full statement:
Over the weekend Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots. He was appropriately treated by the doctors at Mass General Brigham who tested, evaluated and treated Christian.
Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and wellbeing. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best healthcare in the world.
While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.

Nicole Lynn, Barmore’s agent, shared a message to social media after the news was released, specifically thanking Patriots trainer, Jim Whalen.
“I would be remiss if I did not thank the Patriots’ trainer, Jim Whalen, for his absolute diligence and care over the last couple of days,” Lynn wrote. “Today could have looked a lot different without Jim’s persistent and expertise.”
Barmore, who turned 25 on Sunday, is coming off his best year in the NFL. He totaled 8.5 sacks, 64 tackles and 16 quarterback hits. His sacks as well as the 13 tackles for loss were career highs.
In the offseason, Barmore was rewarded with a four-year extension worth up to $92 million with $41.8 million in guaranteed money. The deal made him the highest paid defensive player in team history.
“Barmore, he’s a locker room guy, you know, everybody loves him in there. Character,” Josh Uche told reporters at Gillette Stadium in April. “Just a disruptive football player on the field. I just remember the stretch that Christian went on the last year. He just stepped into his own. It’s just amazing to see him kind of blossom and to be a part of that. I’m excited for the future of Christian Barmore. I’m excited to see where he takes this.”
Longtime Patriots center David Andrews also dealt with blood clots in 2019 and missed the entire season.
