Patriots rookie WR aims to ‘dominate’ amidst difficult season

FRANKFURT, Germany – There haven’t been many positives to come out of this disappointing Patriots season.

The team’s embarrassing loss in Germany on Sunday was just another example. Between Mac Jones’ loss of confidence and the dismal offensive output, one shining start emerged – Demario Douglas.

The Patriots rookie receiver had the best game of his NFL career in the Patriots loss to the Colts. Douglas finished with six receptions for 84 receiving yards. The sixth-round pick led the Patriots in targets (8), receptions and yards.

After the game, Douglas had no idea where his stat line stood. The receiver from Liberty University said his confidence continues to rise during this season.

“I come into every game with confidence,” Douglas told MassLive. “Every game, I come in with that confidence and that swagger just to dominate.”

After Kendrick Bourne went down with a season-ending knee injury, Douglas emerged as the Patriots new No. 1 receiver. Against the Washington Commanders, he finished with five catches on seven targets for 55 yards.

Sunday, in Frankfurt, Douglas turned it up a notch. The rookie had a 30-yard catch before the end of the half. In the fourth quarter, he caught a 21-yard pass on third down.

Douglas noted there are aspects of the game that he’s still learning.

“I feel like game-by-game I grow,” Douglas said. “I learn something new about the game every day, every game. Like on the punt return when he touched it, now I know I can grab that and advance the ball. I learn stuff and grow every game.”

That’s been clear. Douglas has been a shining star in an otherwise horrible season for the Patriots. In Germany, despite the loss, this rookie was one of the few players who returned home with momentum.

“That was amazing,” Douglas said of the atmosphere. “I love Germany. Shout out to Germany. This was my first time out of the country.

“I never knew this come with (my NFL dreams). Nothing but a blessing.”
