Patrick Mahomes remains humble on Tom Brady comparisons after Super Bowl LVIII win

The Chiefs are the first team to earn back-to-back wins in the Super Bowl since the New England Patriots did so in 2003 and 2004. Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday in Las Vegas, meaning Patrick Mahomes put himself in with Tom Brady as quarterbacks to win consecutive Super Bowls.

Mahomes being compared to Brady is nothing new. And now that he and his team accomplished something only Brady and his team did two decades ago, the comparisons are stronger than ever. But Mahomes said there’s one reason it’s always going to be “tough” to hear the comparisons.

“To me, it’s always gonna be tough because Brady beat me in the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said on “NFL GameDay” after their win at Allegiant Stadium.

In Brady’s first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he defeated the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. 31-9. Brady earned his seventh Super Bowl ring with the victory.

After Sunday’s victory, Mahomes is one step closer to reaching Brady’s record — but he’s still four rings away. It’s not an impossible feat, but a lot has to go right for both the 28-year-old and his team to continue their run of success.

And even though his teammate, Travis Kelce, believes Mahomes will catch all of Brady’s accolades, the two-time NFL MVP hasn’t thought much of it.

“I mean, I’m not even close to halfway, so I haven’t put a lot of thought into it. I mean, your goal is to be the best player that you can be. I know I’m blessed to be around a lot of great players around me. And so, right now, it’s doing whatever I can to beat a great 49ers team and try to get that third ring,” Mahomes told reporters in Las Vegas on Monday. “And then if you ask me that question in 15 years, and I’ll see if I can get close to seven. But seven seems like a long ways away still.”

Three Super Bowl wins is one step closer to Brady, but it’s still an uphill climb to reach what he did.
