NORTON — Rockland’s Megan Khang was the lone Mass. golfer who made the cut after two rounds at the FM Championship at TPC Boston.
Much like Day 1, Khang had a rough start to Day 2, bogeying on four holes and double-bogeying on hole 4 — which she admitted frustrated her, especially after being 5-under at one point during the day. She finished the day 1-under.
“But there is plenty of golf left. I knew coming in there were some gettable holes,” she said Friday. “And just kind of keep giving myself chances. Instead of focusing on the bogeys I made I had to change the mindset to be like, ‘I hit some really good shots to make the birdies I did make on my front nine.’
“I’ll admit I may have hit my golf bag to let out a little frustration. I try not to bottle it all in,” Khang later added. “Just a lot of the deep breaths and just trying to physically shake it off. At the same time, again, trying to focus on what I did well on my front nine, then staying within myself and saying, ‘You know what? It was just a fluke. That wasn’t me. That was my alter ego.’ I don’t have a name for her. Have to figure that one out.
“But, you know, again, golf is tough. This golf course is tough,” she concluded. “I knew that I was going to be able to possibly bounce back, and to go from 5-under at one point to 1-under is definitely kind of a little frustrating.”
Westborough’s Alex Pano and Westford’s Alison Walshe did not make the cut after shooting 3-over and 11-over, respectively.
“I kind of shot myself out of the tournament the first day, but this was still a great experience,” Walshe told MassLive’s Karen Guregian after her round on Friday, but still called the experience a “dream come true.”
“I won’t forget this,” Walshe told MassLive. “I would have liked to have played better yesterday. I’m glad I played better today … but I’ll forever remember this. I’m really grateful to have had it happen.”
Xiyu Lin, the Chinese bronze medalist, who lives in Boston with her fiancé, did not make the cut after shooting 3-over.
Round 3 begins Saturday at 7:30 a.m. EST. Khang will tee off at 11:50 a.m.
