BOSTON — Anyone who bought a ticket to TD Garden on Tuesday hoping to see the best player in the world play live was treated to a pretty breakaway goal on the power play by Connor McDavid.
Anyone who purchased their seat hoping to see the Bruins bounce back after a rough road trip was significantly less satisfied by their experience.
The Bruins were outshot, outplayed and outscored by the Oilers, in the 4-0 loss and are now winless in their last five.
Boston (20-18-5) is at Tampa on Thursday.
Adam Henrique opened the scoring in the first period. From behind the net, Corey Perry threaded a pass through traffic to Henrique in the slot. He snapped it by Jeremy Swayman to make it 1-0, 6:33 into the game.
With the Oilers badly outplaying the sluggish home team near the midway point of the second period, Trent Frederic used a heavy check by Perry and an excuse to challenge the veteran to a try-to-pick-the-team-up fight.
Perry was hesitant and Frederic’s persistence earned him two extra minutes for roughing. The scrap briefly had the desired effect as Frederic tuned up the 39-year-old winger, with a windmill flurry of right hands that left the Bruins center with bloody knuckles.
If Pavel Zacha had finished on his short-handed breakaway, the Bruins might have extended that momentum, but Stuart Skinner thwarted him and the attempt allow McDavid to get a breakaway. He beat Swayman to make it 2-0 with 8:49 left.
Adam Henrique scored his second just over five minutes later ending any suspense.
The Bruins never really threatened and were booed during a third-period power play.
Swayman made 35 saves to keep the score from being worse that it was. Skinner made 26 for the shutout.
