Obesity in the U.S. decreases for first time in decade

The United States was found to be a little bit thinner and healthier in 2023. Research findings show a decrease in obesity for the first time in a decade. Although this percentage is only 0.4%, it moves the needle in the opposite direction. Like weight loss, a trend has to start somewhere.

Obesity is a leading public health issue. It is a serious, complex and costly chronic disease accounting for 20% of children and 40% of adults. Approximately 200 billion dollars is spent annually on medical expenditures. Obesity itself cascades into many other mental, social and physical health problems. We are on the right track, but still have a way to go.

Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.
