North End restaurant owner charged in connection with shooting re-arrested

A Boston restaurant owner charged in connection with a shooting outside a popular Italian bakery in the North End last year was arrested on Saturday after police say he cut off the GPS monitoring device he had been ordered to wear.

Patrick Mendoza was taken into police custody around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday at an address on North Bennett Street in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Sgt. Detective John Boyle, a spokesman for Boston police, told MassLive Monday morning. Mendoza was wanted on a warrant charging him with violating his probation, which Boyle said “opens up” the original charges he faced in connection with the shooting near Modern Pastry.

Police recovered Mendoza’s electric monitoring device from him, which appeared to have been cut, according to Boyle.

The shooting outside Modern Pastry occurred around 11:10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, police said previously.

A man standing outside Modern Pastry at the time claimed Mendoza rode by him on a bicycle, yelled obscenities at him, pulled out a gun and fired two times in his direction, The Boston Globe said, citing a police report.

No one was injured in the shooting, but one of Modern’s windows was damaged by the gunfire, the Globe continued.

WCVB reported Mendoza is one of the owners of Monica’s Trattoria on Prince Street, an Italian restaurant that is a short walk away from Modern Pastry.

He is charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and assault and battery, according to Boston police.
