Another rainy weekend is on deck for Massachusetts residents as weather officials have strong reason to believe that a nor’easter could develop, bringing soaking rain and heavy winds.
Thursday is expected to be beautiful with sunny skies, light winds and temperatures in the 60s, the National Weather Service said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
However, a low pressure system that will develop over the mid-Atlantic region will bring widespread showers to Massachusetts Friday through Sunday, with Saturday being the wettest of the weekend days, forecasters said.
This system has the potential to become a full-fledged nor’easter, according to AccuWeather.
As the energy from the system moves to New England, a storm will form along the Carolina coast, AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.
“The storm will strengthen significantly as it travels northward on Saturday night and Sunday and may even curl northwestward over the interior of New England,” Rayno said. “The storm is likely to evolve into a potent nor’easter and produce a zone of heavy rain, strong winds and building seas.”
Forecasters believe the storm will have a stronger impact on areas north of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, AccuWeather said. New York City and southern New England will have the most rain as well.
As of Thursday morning, the National Weather Service Even does not expect more than an inch of rain in Massachusetts.
So far only the northern portion of the state is under a limited risk for excessive rainfall on Saturday, according to a hazardous weather outlook map. There is also the potential for wind gusts up to 40 mph on Saturday.
The storm will bring dry and chilly weather after it passes, with a potential for widespread frost Tuesday morning, forecasters continued. More mild weather is expected during the middle of next week.
