Newton police captain remembered as dedicated father after unexpected death

Friends, family and community members remembered Police Captain William L. Spalding after he unexpectedly died Wednesday.

He started his career on April 13, 1998 and spent more than 25 years at the Newton Police Department. He lived with his family in Framingham.

“Captain Spalding was a loving and dedicated father and husband,” Newton Police Chief John Carmichael wrote, adding he had three children.

“As we continue to mourn his loss, we ask that our community comes together to support those that knew and loved him,” Carmichael wrote.

One woman on Facebook remembered Spalding for his “bigger than life smile” but also his stubbornness.

The city of Framingham also remembered the police captain.

“Captain Spalding was very visible in the City, as a very loving & supportive husband and dad. The City offers our deepest sympathy,” a statement read.

Many others remembered Spalding on social media, including Chris Saris who said Spalding was “one of the best people I have ever known.”

While Bobby Allan remembered him for his selflessness.

“A true genuine amazing person who was selfless and put his family first over everything else,” Allan wrote. “I was honored to know you and call you a friend.”
