The Miami Dolphins have one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks in the form of Jalen Ramsey. Suddenly, they’re reportedly looking to trade him.
On Tuesday, NFL Network Ian Rapoport reported that the Dolphins and Ramsey “are mutually set to explore trade options.” Rapoport added that it would “make sense” for Ramsey to be moved before the 2025 NFL Draft, since it would give Miami timely draft compensation.
Rapoport notes that the Dolphins have already paid out a $4 million bonus to Ramsey. As a result, any team that trades for the cornerback would owe him only $21.1 million of the $25.1 million he’s owed this year in guaranteed money.
That would be just over the $20 million per year the Patriots agreed to pay Carlton Davis over the next three seasons.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise. The 30-year-old cornerback is considered one of the best in the NFL at his position. The former Jaguars and Rams star is a three-time First-Team All-Pro selection and a seven-time Pro Bowler.
The 2024 season marked the first time Ramsey failed to make a Pro Bowl since his rookie season in 2016.
In 2024, Ramsey signed a three-year, $72.3 million contract extension that would keep him in Miami through the 2028 season.
Money could be a factor in the trade. Ramsey’s extension made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback. However, recent contracts have since leapfrogged Ramsey’s deal.
