New England Patriots bringing back coach with enigmatic role (report)

It’s not abundantly clear what Ben McAdoo does with the New England Patriots. But whatever it is, he must do it well.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, McAdoo is expected to stick around in New England. McAdoo was a senior offensive assistant under Jerod Mayo last year. But as Reiss notes, McAdoo’s role could change under new coach Mike Vrabel.

McAdoo is set to be just the third member of Mayo’s 2024 staff sticking around in 2025. The team is also retaining special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer and assistant special teams coach Tom Quinn.

McAdoo, a former head coach with the New York Giants, had an ill-defined role on Mayo’s staff last year. He’s not a position coach, so he wasn’t required to speak to media (which he didn’t). The team didn’t comment on it much, but MassLive’s Mark Daniels did some digging last year.

It turned out that he “does a little bit of everything,” according to running back Rhamondre Stevenson. McAdoo worked with quarterbacks, picking his spots to give advice to quarterback Drake Maye. He also built a strong relationship with backup quarterback Joe Milton, spending time with him when so much of the week was spent getting Maye ready.

McAdoo also ran meetings on Thursday mornings to go over third down situations. McAdoo also served as the defensive coordinator for the Patriots scout team during practice.
