N.J. woman drove drunk, fatally hit Boston man on moped, DA says

A New Jersey woman is facing criminal charges after authorities said she fatally struck a Boston man in a multi-vehicle crash in Cambridge last week.

The crash happened around 1:21 a.m. on March 21 at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Lauren Mullins, 32, of Roselle Park, New Jersey, who was driving an SUV, was driving eastbound on Massachusetts Avenue near the intersection of Vassar Street, the district attorney said.

The SUV hit a moped and then a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police cruiser, both of which were driving eastbound ahead of Mullins’ SUV, the district attorney said.

The moped driver, Daniel O’Neil, 73, of Boston, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later died, the district attorney said.

Mullins was arrested on-scene and charged with operating under the influence – liquor with serious bodily injury and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the district attorney said.

During her arraignment on March 21, Mullins’ bail was set at $15,000, the district attorney said. She was ordered not to consume alcohol or drugs, not to drive, to stay in Massachusetts and to submit to random drug and alcohol tests.

During Mullins’ bail hearing, her bail was revoked on a pending case out of the Boston Municipal Court, the district attorney said. Following the death of O’Neil, Mullins’ case has been advanced for a bail hearing that is scheduled for Thursday.
