Several sections of a wind turbine blade detached from the hub they had been attached to on an offshore wind turbine off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, sending several large pieces tumbling into the ocean below for the second time this month.
GE Vernova, the manufacturer of the turbine, told Nantucket town officials that the detachment of more pieces of the turbine was not unexpected, according to a statement posted to the town’s website. The U.S. Coast Guard is enforcing a 500-meter “safety exclusion zone” around the turbine while crews work to clear the debris.
