MLB Notebook: Why the KC Royals are still playing and the Red Sox are not

Over the last 21 years, the Red Sox have won four championships. On two other occasions, they have gone to Game 7 of the ALCS. In total, they qualified for the postseason 11 times in that span.

In that same time frame, the Kansas City Royals have reached the postseason three times and won one title. They’ve also finished with a losing record in 17 seasons. In fact, beyond their three playoff appearances in that span, they’ve won more games than they lost on only one other time.
