Most of the focus on the minor leagues is, understandably, on an organization’s best young players and their paths toward the big leagues.

Teams hoard their best young players, treating them as rare gems. The reasons? Both competitive and economic. In addition to the talent they can infuse into a major league roster, there’s the cost control they bring for the first three seasons, where they make little more than the major league minimum.
