Mass. woman wins $1M Powerball prize during $1B drawing with family’s birthdays

A woman from Massachusetts was one of three $1 million winners in the state during the Powerball drawing for $1.07 billion on July 19, and said she used her family’s birthdays for her numbers when she claimed her prize on Friday, the lottery announced.

Jan Busby, a Norfolk resident, was the first $1 million winner from Massachusetts to claim her $1 million prize on July 21 at lottery headquarters in Dorchester.

Busby told the lottery she’d selected her winning numbers based off of family members’ birthdays, the lottery said. The winning numbers for the drawing were 7, 10, 11, 13, 24 and Powerball: 24. Busby won her $1 million by matching all five numbers on her ticket, but did not match the Powerball number.

The winner said she only plays the lottery “a few times a year,” but had bought a ticket for the jackpot drawing on July 19 because it was valued so high, the lottery stated.

Busby had purchased her $1 million ticket from a Shaw’s Supermarket in Franklin, located at 255 East Central St. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

One of the three $1 million Powerball tickets won in Massachusetts during the $1 billion drawing still has yet to be claimed as of July 25; this winning ticket was sold at a Gulf and Global Montello station at 821 Main St. in Waltham.
