Mass. will see some precipitation on Thursday. Will it be rain or snow?

A weather system arriving Thursday is expected to bring precipitation to Massachusetts. But what sort of precipitation remains uncertain.

National Weather Service forecasters say the latest guidance suggests a “snow-to-rain scenario with a period of sleet and/or freezing rain thrown in for good measure.” But they noted the “margin of error” for the event is small, and a temperature swing of only a couple of degrees could make a significant difference.

“The one thing there is high confidence in is getting measurable precipitation some time Thursday,” forecasters wrote.

The next chance of precipitation comes late Saturday into Sunday, when forecasters are expecting another mixed precipitation event.

Both systems should bring periods of colder and warmer weather as they move through the state, but forecasters say the temperature swings won’t be unusual for early February.
