Mass. weather: Air quality alert issued for parts of Bay State on Tuesday

If oppressive heat and humidity and a chance of thunderstorms weren’t enough to worry about on Tuesday, forecasters are warning that air in some parts of Massachusetts is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children.

The air quality alert, issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, or DEP, includes many of the state’s largest metropolitan areas, with Boston, Springfield and Worcester all encompassed by the warning. The other areas covered by the alert are Framingham, Lowell, Lawrence, Gloucester, Amherst, Northampton, Milford, Foxborough, Norwood, Cambridge and Quincy.

The alert runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, and specifically concerns Ground Level Ozone. According to DEP, ozone concentrations may “approach or exceed levels that are Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”
