Mass. surveillance: Why police use of toll cameras has advocates concerned

In July of 2020, a day after a stabbing at the Auburn Mall, a Massachusetts State Police trooper contacted state Department of Transportation officials with a request: could they set up an alert that would ping the next time a suspect’s vehicle passed under a highway tollbooth?

The state police issued a similar request this past January 13 as they tracked down a person wanted in connection with a recent domestic incident. A few days later, they did so again, this time after a person with dementia went missing.
