Mass. robotics team mentor took sexual photos of high school students, officials say

A mentor for a high school robotics team in Massachusetts was arrested and charged with possessing child sex abuse images, including some taken at the high school.

Brian Lingard, 60, of Shrewsbury, was charged with transportation of and possession of child pornography. He was arrested Monday morning.

During a customs screening on Oct. 19, when Lingard flew from Paris to Boston, officials found Lingard had images of child sex abuse on his phone, the complaint affidavit stated. The investigation found further devices with these types of photos at his home.

Officials claim Lingard’s phone had about 23 of these images, which included minors who appear to be under 10 years old. At least two of the images included minors who have previously been identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as child sexual abuse victims, acting United States Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua S. Levy’s office said.

Some of the photos included photos taken of girls butts at Shrewsbury High School, Levy’s office said. The girls were fully clothed.

The charge of transportation of child pornography provides for a sentence of not less than five years and up to 20 years in prison, up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. The charge of possession of child pornography provides for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.
