Mass. police sgt. could be fired for not reporting rape allegations against deputy chief

A Hopkinton police sergeant is facing termination for not reporting allegations that a former police deputy chief sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl to law enforcement. So far, the town’s select board has been paralyzed over making a decision in a case which is nuanced and complicated.

Sgt. Timothy Brennan’s predicament stems from an investigation into former Hopkinton Deputy Chief John “Jay” Porter, who was indicted on child rape charges in the spring of 2023. Brennan has admitted that he learned of some of the allegations from the victim as far back as 2017 and never reported them to law enforcement.
